เพลง Because of You ของ Kelly Clarkson ปล่อยซิงเกิลออกมาเมื่อปี 2005 เพลงนี้เขียนจากมุมมองของคนที่เติบโตมาในครอบครัวที่แตกแยก และบอกกับตนเองว่าจะไม่ทำผิดพลาดแบบที่พ่อแม่เคยทำ เพลงนี้มีการใช้ภาพพจน์ (figures of speech) อยู่หลายจุด ผมจะแปลค่อนข้างตรงตัว ให้ผู้อ่านลองตีความกันดูนะครับ

1. ประธาน (Subject): I

2. ภาคแสดง (Predicate): ส่วนที่เหลือทั้งหมด ซึ่งอยู่ในรูป verb phrase (VP):

คำกริยาช่วย will ทำหน้าที่เป็น head ของ VP โดยหลัง will มีคำว่า not ทำให้ประโยคเป็นปฏิเสธ และยังมี VP ต่อไปนี้ทำหน้าที่เป็น complement

• กรรมตรง (direct object): so much misery

The song Because of You was released as a single by Kelly Clarkson in 2005. Written from the perspective of someone growing up in a broken family, it expresses a deep resolve not to repeat the mistakes of their parents.

Let’s break down the structure of this sentence:

I will not let myself cause my heart so much misery.

Analysis:

1. The subject: I

2. The predicate: the rest of the sentence, which has the form of a verb phrase (VP):

will not [let myself [cause my heart so much misery]]

The auxiliary verb will serves as head of the entire VP. Will is negated by not, and it takes the VP

[let myself [cause my heart so much misery]]

as complement.

Within this embedded VP, there are two constructions worth noting:

1. The pattern let + object + bare infinitival clause. This is often memorized by ESL/EFL learners as “let someone do something”.

2. The verb cause is used here as a ditransitive verb, meaning it takes two objects:
